Sustainability at the Environmental Protection Agency Sustainability is the ability to achieve continuing economic prosperity while protecting the natural systems of the planet and providing a high quality of life for its people. This site examines sustainability and provides links to EPA programs and tools in four key areas: the Built or human-created Environment; Water, Ecosystems and Agriculture; Energy and the Environment; and Materials and Toxics. Links to the programs and tools are organized in three categories: Policies and Programs; Research, Tools and Technologies; and Assessments and Performance Measures.  
Sustainability in Japan during the Edo period In 1720, Edo (now Tokyo), Japan was the largest city in the world with over a million people. This fascinating article describes how Japan was able to be self-sufficient in all resources, since nothing could be imported from overseas due to the national policy of isolation.  
Video of Zero Waste Agriculture in Vermont A Canadian news program visits an agricultual experiment in which everything is recycled. Spent grain from beer production goes in, and mushroom, fish, tomatoes and prawns come out! Very smart!
